How to Declutter and Organize Your Fridge

It's Time for a Fridge Refresh

If you’ve got a little fridge funk happening, mystery spills crusted onto shelves, or a general sense that nothing fits where it should, it’s officially time for a fridge refresh. And, no, we’re not creating a fridge‑core art installation. We’re talking about maximizing space, minimizing clutter, and setting up a simple system that keeps your fridge clean and functional.

Follow these three steps to give your refrigerator a fresh start.

1. Empty Your Fridge Completely

A reset starts with a full clear‑out. Remove everything so you can see what you’re working with — including that jar of pickle juice hiding in the back because you once read it was great for marinating… something.

This step also gives you the perfect chance to wipe down shelves, drawers, and door bins.

2. Edit and Declutter

With everything on the counter, start grouping items into categories: dairy, beverages, produce, condiments, leftovers, meat, etc.

Then do a quick but honest edit:

  • Toss anything expired.

  • For items still good, ask yourself whether you’ll realistically use them before the date on the label. If not, let them go.

This is the moment where food waste awareness and fridge organization meet.

3. Put Everything Back...with Purpose

Instead of defaulting to your old system, rethink your layout. Create simple zones based on the categories you sorted:

  • A produce zone

  • A dairy zone

  • A leftovers zone

  • A beverage zone

  • A “use‑first” zone for items that need attention

A zoned fridge makes it easier to see what you have, reduces waste, and keeps things tidy longer.

Hot Tip

Adjust Your Shelves

Those shelves in your fridge are adjustable! Placement is key to maximizing space and maintaining your food-storage system. It might be time to rethink your arrangement.

Elle Organizing Team

A clean, organized fridge makes everyday cooking smoother and reduces food waste. Try doing a fridge refresh a couple of times a year. Bring your family — especially kids — into the process so they learn about food safety and mindful consumption.
