Questions to Consider Before Editing Your Home

Think Before You Tweak

Editing your home is like giving your space a fresh haircut. It’s all about trimming the excess, keeping what makes you feel fabulous, and letting your personality shine through. If you’ve recognized that your home needs some tweaking but you aren’t sure where to begin, consider the following simple but powerful questions.

1. Does It Add Value to Your Life?

Every item in your home is either a helper or a hitchhiker. Helpers make your life easier, more beautiful, or more joyful. Hitchhikers? They just ride along, taking up space and energy without giving anything back.

Ask yourself: If I had to pack up and move tomorrow, would I be excited to bring this with me?

If the answer is “meh,” it might be time to let it go.

Quick win: When I walk through my home and see something covered in dust, I know right away it’s a hitchhiker; and it’s easy to let it go.

2. Simply, Is It Worth It?

You might be holding on to something because you think it is worth some money and getting rid of it feels like throwing money away. Worth isn’t just about money, though. It’s about the cost in space, time, and mental load. That bread maker you used twice? It’s not just sitting on your counter; it’s taking up mental bandwidth every time you see it.

Ask: Is this item worth the space it occupies and the upkeep it requires?

If it’s not pulling its weight, it’s costing you more than you think.

Something that helps me determine an item’s worth is to consider if I would pay full price for it today. If not, then it’s not worth as much to me as I thought. So, donate it! Someone will think it is worth it to own it.

3. Ditch the Paperwork

Okay, so you have a filing cabinet with folders of old bills, credit card statements, and other paperwork dating back to your college years, or boxes of old notes from your studies.

Ask: Am I legally required to keep these documents (e.g. taxes, etc.)?

If not, then it can be digitized and/or shredded. In the case of manuals and school notes, that information is readily available online. So, rid yourself of the weight of all of that unnecessary paper.

Curate Your Child's Artwork

Kids’ artwork is adorable… and endless. It can feel wrong to let any of it go, so we lovingly stash every coffee‑filter bumblebee and abstract family portrait. But, unless you’re a scrapbooker, keeping 1–2 favourites per school year is plenty. Let the rest be recycled with gratitude and get excited for next year’s masterpieces.
